TO ATO (RUINS OF PAGODA)

Comments
In the early time after the temple’s foundation two pagodas were standing on the east and west sides respectively in the temple’s precincts. This is the ruins of the Eastern Pagoda. Original pagodas were both burnt down in the Heian period. Though the Eastern Pagoda was rebuilt in the late Fujiwara period, it was destroyed again by a fire in 1502 in the Muromachi period. Recently an octagon-shaped row of small stones was unearthed under the platform of the pagoda, and it is thought that an octagon-shaped seven-storied pagoda was originally planned but its plan was abandoned for some reason
