Comments
Relationship between Ise Grand Shrine and Saidaiji Temple became much closer after Saint Eison took over the leadership of the temple. This altar is one of good examples showing it. It is thought to have been made around the end of Kamakura period. A box-shaped and black-lacquered altar with a double-door at each of the front and back sides. On the intermediate plates inside the altar, Taizokai Shuji Mandara and Kongokai Shuji Mandara are depicted in color, using the technique of thin gold leaf called Kirikane. Height 55.74cm
