In celebration of Saint Eison’s 80th anniversary, this statue was made in 1280 by a Buddhist image sculptor Zenshun at the earnest desire of Eison’s disciples. A realistic expression with great verve gives viewers an impression as if they were seeing the saint alive. Eison’s personality is vividly expressed. Thus, this statue is considered a masterpiece of portrait sculptures in Japan. Many documents were discovered inside it.
