SHITENNO RYUZO & JAKI (STANDING STATUES OF FOUR HEAVENLY KINGS & MALICIOUS OGRES)

Comments
Shitenno, meaning Four Heavenly Kings, consists of Zochoten (Virudhaka, Guardian God of South), Komokuten (Virupaksa or Guardian God of West), Tamonten (Vaisravana or Guardian God of North), and Jikokuten (Dhrtarastra or Guardian God of East). When Saidaiji Temple was established in the Tenpyo period, four statues were originally created at the wish of Empress Shotoku, but only the portion of Jaki (malicious ogre) on which Zochoten is standing has remained to date. Other parts and four original statues were all burnt down by repeated fires. These statues were made again in the later period. High creativity and superb talent of the sculptor can be recognized from the Jaki, a work representing sculptures of the Nara period. Out of total four statues, three are bronze, and one statue, Tamonten, is made of wood except for the portion of legs under knee. Their heights are around 2.18m – 2.42m.
