JIMON CHOKUGAKU (TAMPLE’S GATE IMPERIAL SCROLL)

Comments
According to the record kept at Kairyuoji, this gate plate was presented by Emperor Shomu in 731. Since then it had been put on the temple’s main gate until the first year of the Meiji period. Made of Japanese cypress. Though original color used for the portion of panel of this gate plate cannot be identified, its frame is painted with black lacquer, and lotus-flower arabesque pattern originally painted in color can be slightly identified. When Suzaku-Mon gate was restored in 1998, this gate plate served as a model for designing it.
