OMOTE MON (FRONT GATE)

Comments
This gate is facing to a main street called Higashi Nibo Ohji (East Second Street) in the ancient capital of Nara (Heijokyo). Its architectural style is unique, and this type of gate is called “Shikyaku Mon” (Four-legged gate), meaning that four columns are standing in front of and on the backside of the main round columns. The warpage of its roof rafter represents a style of medieval architecture. Entering through this gate, you can walk on an approach between the mud walls with a roof. It is a typical scenic view of temples in Nara.
