BUTSU NEHAN ZU (PAINTING OF BUDDHA NIRVANA)

Comments
Color painting of Nirvana or Buddha’s death. Shakyamuni lies in the center between sal trees. A lot of people such as bodhisattvas, bhikkhus, alhats, public officials, women, protective deities and more than thirty kinds of birds and animals including lions and white elephants are surrounding it. Facial expressions and feelings of people, who are wailing over the Buddha’s death, are depicted rather moderate and restrained. Soft colors are used. Thus, this painting gives a calm and serene impression as a whole. Made in the latter part of the Kamakura period.
