SUMIDERA SHINGYO (SUMIDERA HEART SUTRA)

Comments
Transcripts of Hannya-Shingyo (Heart Sutra) of the Tenpyo period. They are known as Sumidera-Shingyo. Unlike other Heart Sutras, three lines of Kudokumon meaning the Buddha’s blessing, which can be gained by reciting the Hannya-Shingyo, were added to the end of the main text. Kukai (Kobo Daishi) offered to this temple 1,000 copies of Hannya Shingyou, which were transcribed by himself to pray for his safety during sailing from Japan to Tang China. These sutras are contained in a box on which it is noted that they were transcribed by Kobo Daishi. They have been kept at this temple to date.
