KASA TOBA (STONE STUPA WITH A STONE HAT)

Comments
Two pieces of Kasa Toba (Stone Stupa) were erected by Igyokichi, a son of Igyomatsu, to offer his sincere prayer for the repose of his parent’s souls. In the Muromachi period a Japanese Noh play named “Kasa Toba” was written, and at that time these stone stupas were considered the grave of Taira no Shigehira, one of the chief commanders of the Taira clan in the Heian period. They are the oldest and the largest stone stupas in Japan.
