TAINAIBUTSU SANZON DAINICHI NYORAI ZAZO (SEATED STATUE OF MAHAVAIROCANA, ONE OF THE BUDDHIST STATUES TRIAD KEPT IN THE STATUE OF AMITABTA TATHAGATA)

Comments
This statue was discovered inside the pedestal of the statue of Amitabta Tathagata which was placed in the Thirteen Storied Stone Pagoda. This statue was wrapped in Japanese paper “Washi”. It is thought to have been created at the time of construction of the stone pagoda or to have been dedicated by someone who owned this statue personally after it came from across the sea. It is a small statue but is crafted exquisitely, having an air of the magnificently beautiful and dignified Buddhist image. Superb technique of the sculptor can be recognized.
