YANONE EMA (YANONE WOODEN VOTIVE TABLET)

Comments
This votive tablet was dedicated to Saidaiji Temple by Ichikawa Danjuro the Second, a famous Kabuki actor of the Edo period, on the occasion of a special exposition of Aizen Myo-o (Statue of Ragaraja) at Eko-in Temple in Edo. At that time he was performing “Yanone Goro”, a Kabuki play, at the Nakamura-za theater in Edo, so a scene of the same play was depicted on this tablet in 1754 by Torii Kiyonobu, a famous painter, and then it was dedicated to Saidaiji because Danjuro deeply worshiped Aizen Myo-o.
