BISHAMONTEN GAZO (PAINTING OF VAISRAVANA)

Comments
In this painting, Bishamonten does not stomp on a malicious ogre unlike other ordinary paintings of Bishamonten. Also, it is accompanied by neither disciples nor followers. It is standing alone on a rock, with a pagoda and a spear in hands. Depiction like this is very unique among colored paintings of Bishamonten, a guardian deity of the northern direction. It is quite natural that Bishamonten had been enshrined at a temple founded here long before Kairyuoji was established in 731 because that temple was located in the northeastern direction of the capital. Made in the Heian period.
