All of these statues of Shitenno (Four Heavenly Kings) were made of hinoki (Japanese cypress) using the Yosegi-Zukuri technique meaning parquet building or construction from multiple pieces of wood. The whole body of each statue is thickly colored in a variety of pigments such as vermilion, ultramarine, Montpellier green, ocher, white, and gold paint. On the other hand, face of each statue is painted in a different color, i.e., Montpellier green, ultramarine, white, and vermilion respectively. Further, angry look is expressed on each face in a different manner: One of them is keeping the mouth open, and another is keeping its lips tightly clamped. They are wearing delicate and colorful accessories of tiger and zebra patterns.
