MONJU BOSATSU ZAZO (SEATED STATUE OF MANJUSRI)

Comments
This statue was created for Emperor Godaigo. Petitioner was Monkan Shonin (Saint Monkan) and donator was Fujiwara no Kanemitsu. It was carved by two sculptors named Koshun and Kosei. It had been kept hidden in Kyodo (Sutra Hall), but since the Main Hall was rebuilt in 1667 it has been opened to the public. Monju Bosatsu is believed to preach the teachings of Hannyakyo (Sutra of Perception of Wisdom) and to have transcendent wisdom.
