Inscribed on this stone monument is a poem by Otomo no Yakamochi, a court nobleman and a Japanese “waka” poet in the Nara period. He is widely believed to have been a compiler of the Manyoshu (Japan’s oldest anthology of Japanese poetry) in which more than 4,500 poems are contained.
